INTRODUCING THE
Turn fragmented learner data into trusted, usable information.
The Learner Information Framework (LIF) is a set of open-source tools and a shared data model that works with existing systems to standardize learner data so institutions and applications can use it securely and reliably.
Learners All Take Different Paths

This diagram illustrates that learners follow diverse lifelong learning pathways through various educational and workforce experiences, including military service, certificate programs, internships, GED, part-time work, community college, apprenticeships, hourly work, online learning, professional development, and college.
The Challenge LIF Addresses
Today, learner data is scattered across many organizations, services, and personal records. This fragmentation makes it difficult for adults learners to share their information with institutions and employers, and it prevents institutions serving adult learners from seeing a complete picture of them.
Centering Learners in the System
LIF enables institutions and application teams to identify learner data across multiple systems, translate into a consistent model, make it usable through APIs and tools for approved purposes.

This illustration shows a learner profile at the center, surrounded by interconnected data categories: Assessment, Course, Employment, Experience, Learner Demographics, Competencies, Credentials, and Program.
Who LIF is For
LIF supports technical decision-makers, data teams, and builders.
Leadership &
Technical Decision-Makers
Senior leaders responsible for strategy, scale, and long-term sustainability.
IT &
Data Teams
Teams responsible for data architecture, integrations, and system reliability.
Product &
Application Teams
Teams building tools such as portals, wallets, advising platforms, and AI-enabled applications.
About the LIF Team
LIF tools were developed through a collaboration among leading organizations in education data systems and standards. This work brings together expertise in assessment, infrastructure, and large-scale implementation to address the long-standing challenge of translating and composing multi-source learner records in a governed format that works consistently across systems.
